Matter of Faith – How Are Religions Developing in Germany?

The fact that Christianity is the most widespread religion in Germany is generally taken for granted, as is the fact that atheism ranks second. However, the question remains how the membership numbers of not only Christian churches have developed and will continue to evolve.

Scandals Take Their Toll

In recent years, the Catholic Church has repeatedly been shaken by abuse scandals. Against this backdrop, it’s no surprise that members who were baptized out of family tradition but are effectively atheists have considered saving on church taxes rather than supporting questionable activities.

Developments in Recent Years

Since 2020, the proportion of Christian church members has decreased from 53% (source: fowid) to 50%. In contrast, Islam has increased its share of the population from 6.4–6.7% in 2020 (exact numbers are not provided by the Federal Ministry of the Interior, source: BMI) to 8.5%.

The proportion of Jewish citizens in Germany has risen from 0.1% in 2018 to 0.3%, according to the “Research Group on Worldviews in Germany.” This increase is primarily attributed to immigration from Eastern European countries.

For those less familiar with the distribution of religious beliefs in Germany, it may be surprising that Hinduism and Buddhism are more prevalent than the Jewish faith community.

What Does the Development of Religious Communities Mean for Germany’s Future?

It is undeniable that the negative trend in membership for Christian churches will be difficult to reverse. The rigid structures of the Catholic Church, in particular, make it challenging to attract younger generations. Without modern adaptations, younger people see little legitimacy in these institutions. The number of non-religious citizens with European roots is expected to continue growing over time.

On the other hand, immigration from the Middle East and Africa is increasing the number of Muslim believers in Germany. The Muslim community already has a stable foundation through Turkish and Turkish-origin citizens. The traditionally authoritarian integration of individuals into their faith community prevents erosion among its members.
