On-demand streaming has entered many households and is becoming a growing competitor to linear television. Despite this, linear TV remains dominant in Germany. In 2024, 62% of Germans watch more than 6 hours of linear TV per week, while 42% use on-demand TV. The trend shows a decline in live TV and an increase in on-demand, narrowing the gap. In 2022, 65% of people watched more than 6 hours of linear TV per week (3% more than this year), and 32% watched on-demand content (10% less than this year). These data are from the current [Media Landscape Report](https://business.yougov.com/de/content/49406-media-landscape-report) for Germany by the international Data & Analytics Group YouGov.Linear TV is particularly popular among older respondents: Among those aged 55 and over, every second person (50%) watches more than 16 hours per week, while only 15% of 18-24-year-olds do the same. For on-demand TV, the ratio is reversed: 51% of 18-24-year-olds watch more than 6 hours of on-demand content per week, compared to 30% of those aged 55 and over. **For one in four, television is the most important news source** Although the trend is declining, television remains the most important news source: This year, 26% of respondents said that television is the most frequently used news source. In 2020, it was 29%. Currently, news apps on smartphones (11%) and social networks (10%) follow. Radio is currently the fourth most important news source (9%). In 2020, radio was the second most important news source at 12%, followed by printed newspapers (11%) and the websites of newspapers and news apps on smartphones (both 10%).
