Producer prices have reached an all-time high, which will soon be reflected in consumer prices.
Consumers are of course wondering what is causing these extreme price increases. While general food prices rose by only 2.8 percent between March 2025 and April 2025, coffee prices rose by 12.2 percent over the same period. If we look back to April 2021, food prices rose by 31.4 percent by April 2025, coffee beans by 31.2 percent, and general consumer prices by only 18.8 percent (source: Destatis.de).

Climate crisis as a price driver

The main cause of the enormous price increase is crop failures caused by the climate crisis and its consequences. The shortage of global coffee production inevitably leads to rising prices when demand remains the same.

Brazil, Germany’s most important trading partner accounting for 41 percent of imports, was hit by extreme heavy rainfall in 2024, leading to landslides and destroyed plantations. The rain was followed by an extreme heatwave, which further damaged the weather-sensitive coffee plants.
Vietnam, Germany’s second-largest coffee partner with a 16 percent share of imports, experienced a meteorological horror scenario in September 2024 with Typhoon Yagi and in August 2025 with Typhoon Kajiki, which inevitably had an impact on the coffee harvest.
Honduras, the third largest coffee importer, supplies around five percent of coffee imports annually. In November 2024, tropical storm Sara destroyed houses, fields, and plantations. Switching to other coffee-exporting countries, such as those in Africa, does not offer any significant advantages. The excessive rainfall in South America and Southeast Asia contrasts with the ongoing droughts in Africa.

Working conditions not taken into account

Unfortunately, when compiling its statistics, Destatis was unable or unwilling to distinguish between “conventional” coffee cultivation and coffee harvesting and, for example, Fairtrade products. Worldwide sales of Fairtrade coffee rose by 192 percent between 2012 and 2017 (kaffee-kooperative.de). The market share of five percent in 2017 is even higher today. This inevitably increases the proportion of coffee with higher production costs, which ultimately drives up the average price of total imports.

Different price trends for decaffeinated and caffeinated coffee

The price increases for roasted coffee in this country vary between caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee. While decaffeinated roasted coffee increased by 45.2 percent in April 2025 compared to April 2024, the price increase for caffeinated coffee was 43.3 percent higher in the same period.

[51,52

post-9041","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-economy","category-trending
["GET
