UEFA Euro: Germany Popular Host, No ‘Summer Fairy Tale’ Expectation

Germany is preparing for this year’s major football event: UEFA EURO 2024. YouGov, in collaboration with the SINUS Institute, surveyed Germans about their attitude towards the Euros being held in their own country. Topics such as Germany’s favorite role, security concerns, and the societal significance of the tournament were the focus.

A majority of Germans (56 percent) support hosting the European Championship in Germany, although only 28 percent believe in a repeat of the “summer fairy tale” of 2006.

One-third (32 percent) of respondents are looking forward to UEFA EURO 2024, while 46 percent are indifferent and 11 percent reject the tournament.

One in five Germans believes in Germany winning the Euro

21 percent of respondents are optimistic that the German national team will win the European Championship, while 7 percent expect an early exit.

Confidence in national coach Julian Nagelsmann is mixed, with 39 percent supporting him. However, there are concerns about the current state of German football.

Euro 2024 sparks interest in football especially among women

The European Championship increases women’s interest in football, while overall 52 percent of Germans show interest in the Euros.

German attitudes towards football: Enthusiasm for competition vs. political sensitivity

Interest in football varies significantly depending on social milieu and personal values, as indicated by the Sinus milieus.

Some milieus, such as the Performers, strongly identify with football’s competitive nature, while others, like the Neo-Ecological milieu, show less interest.

Football, politics, and terrorism – hosting the Euros in Germany raises concerns

47 percent of Germans are concerned about possible terrorist attacks during UEFA EURO 2024, especially in large crowds.

Only one in twelve Austrians believes in an Euro title for the Austrian team

In Austria, interest in UEFA EURO 2024 is also noticeable, although slightly lower than in Germany.
